MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Crusaders of Tennessee Temple used some brutal defensive pressure Saturday afternoon and defeated Region 3-A rival CSAS, 62-37, bringing home the gold ball to Chattanooga.
No. 2-ranked Temple used an 18-0 run to begin the third quarter and held the Patriots to just three points in that period, taking a 48-19 lead before Hassaan Cobb hit a three with 1:21 left.
Seth Skogen was voted MVP of the Class A boys state tournament and finished with 25 points.
Temple head coach Kevin Skogen said his team's defensive effort was the difference.
"I think defensively we were able to put pressure on them not only full-court but half-court as well," he said. "When we can hold a team to three points in a quarter, that is big. When we are stagnent on defense it tends to slow our offense down."
Tennessee Temple jumped to an 8-1 first quarter lead before the Patriots offense started to roll. The Patriots closed the gap to 10-7 after two free throws by Brian Ball with 4:40 left in the first quarter.
Jumpers by Jeremy Sexton and Seth Skogen gave the Crusaders a 14-7 lead.
Back to back three pointers from Skogen opened the second quarter, giving Temple a 26-12 lead. The Crusaders maintained the comfertable first half lead for the remainder of the first half.
Free throws by Dontay Hampton with 19 seconds left in the half closed out the scoring with Temple leading, 30-19.
Both teams were 2 of 7 from long range in the first half. Temple shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, scoring several layups off their back-court pressure.
CSAS shot only 30 percent from the field in the first half.
After Temple's big run in the third quarter, the Patriots were unable to recover.
Although Temple struggled from long range (2-13), it shot 51 percent from the field and 86% from the free-throw line.
CSAS was led by Terrill Townsend who had 10 points and Dontay Hampton who finished with nine.
Skogen pulled his three senior leaders late in the game, with the last one being Dee Newson. The senior leader had 12 points and seven rebounds. Coach Skogen credited Newson for his leadership this year.
"We emphasized a team concept and they bought into it," Skogen said. "Dee did a great job running the team. I have been telling Dee all year this is your team and I have tried to stay out of his way. He is a great leader."
A dissappointed Mark Dragoo talked about his teams lack of execution during the post-game press conference.
"Their execution on defense was better than ours," he said. "I thought we did a good job. In the third quarter we started to dribble too much and weren't moving. Their three seniors and their experience made a big difference for them."
The Patriots will only lose one senior starter off his Class A runner-up team and was happy to have the experience this year.
"We were glad to have the oppurtunity," he said. "It just wasn't meant to be."
Crusader senior Dee Newson credited the win to some heavy praying this week.
"I have been praying all week that we would win a state championship," he said. "The Lord blessed us."
