| Friday, October 27, 2006 was the official kick-off of our annual neighborhood paper recycling project. Those in attendance included Councilwoman Debbie Gaines, Rock-Tenn General Manager Mark Troxel, Highland Park resident and neighborhood association board member Jackie Phelps, New City Fellowship Youth Pastor Andre McGary, TTA Paper Drive Coordinators Gary and Angela Voigt, TTA Headmaster Dr. Connie Pearson, TTA Development Director Rob Eldridge, TTA Student Body President Colton Brown and Mrs. Land and the 4 th grade class. Many thanks to the 4 th grade class who decorated the bags for the event. |

The paper recycle project was a planned response to the charge that came from Mayor Littlefield. “We realized that we were located in a central location in Highland Park and that we had the “manpower” to coordinate a recycling project,” Mr. Eldridge said. “We had been thinking of ways that we could embrace our community on a larger scale and we had no idea that it would happen through this endeavor.” Mr. Eldridge noted that without any public announcements or signage, the “big green paper eating monster”; what the students are calling the paper container, is half full. |
| The school will be placing signage on the container to remind residents what can and can not be placed in the container and a large red banner will reside at the corner of Hawthorne and Bailey Ave. to help establish a visual presence. The container is available at all times for drop-off. Councilwoman Debbie Gaines reminded those in attendance that her record would show that she has always spoken in favor of recycling and that she was pleased to see the grass roots efforts of Tennessee Temple Academy. The 4 th grade class presented to her one of the bags they decorated for her to use to recycle her paper. Mark Troxel, General Manager of Rock-Tenn spoke in favor of the project and of their companies desire to see more efforts like TTA’s. “We work with several schools and churches but we have not seen such an organized and concerted effort as we have with TTA. We are excited to be a part of what they are doing for our community.” Mr. Troxel informed Dr. Pearson of the chance to tour the recycling plant to which councilwoman Gaines and the 4 th grade class responded with their desire to attend. |
