I posted all student grades on the EDline yesterday.  All of each student's grades are posted on that report. except the Exam they took on Friday, the 9th and a 12 point quiz they took today and a 20 point bonus point quiz they have tomorrow.

I want to explain my grading system to you for it does not math the method most teachers in the Academy use.  Mine is not better, I just like it better and I have used it so long I want to keep using it.   My system is known as the Total Point System.  I designate each assignment or test or quiz for a specific number of points against which the student is graded on that item.  Pop Quizzes and Homework range from 3 points to about 20 points, with most being around 10 - 12 points.  I will sometimes give an question that has 5 possible answers and ask for 3 for 3 points.  If the student can give four or all five answers I will give them 4 or 5 points against the 3 which was 100% for that quiz.  I also give opportunites to bring in extra material that comes up on class.  The students that bring that material in get bonus points.

I do not weight tests as a certain percent of the grade and exams as a greater percent and quuizzes as lesser weight.  I assignment more points to the more difficult or more important tests, exams, or assignments.

To calculate a student's grade I simple add all the possible points on the various items together.  The score you have recorded on Edline is based on a possible 384 points up to this time.  I then add all of the points the student has earned on all items plus the bonus points the student has earned.  I then divide the points earned by the points possible and get the percentage of points for that student.  I then compare the percentage made against the Temple Academy grade scale and assign the student a letter grade.

Under this system, a student can earn more points that the top possible points.  For a grading period the student will be assignmed 100 % grade of A+.  The points that the student has above the 100% (384) will be carried over toward the next grading report.

I hope this helps you understand the grade your young person received on the report just posted.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

I will send you an upgrade of each student's score and grade when I grade the  big exzam and the 12 points quiz and add the points earned on the 20 possible point bonus quiz.

I am very pleased with the work of the class as a whole.  I was afraid I would be too difficult for high scoolers since I have taught college for so long.  I am not too hard.  I might be too easy, but I think the students have worked hard and produced wellon all quilzzes, tests, homework, and assignments.  They have been diligent about homework.  All of this goes toward giving the kind of grades we have earned thus far during the school year.

Welcome to the Web Page of Dr. Roger Stiles, Teacher of Ninth Grade Geography during Fourth Period.

A few items of which you naed to be aware are listed below:

The examination on Wednesday, August 26th, went very well.  We had no bad grades.  We had more than half of the students taking the exam made a letter grade of A or A-.  We had two students who have not taken the exam yet since they were absent on the day befoe the test for review or on the day of the test.  Please pray for Miss Autumn Farley.  She is ill with the flue and has missed class all week.

Homework for Monday and Wednesday will be distributed on Thursday, August 27th.  On Friday we will review the test with the class.  We will announce quizzes for next Tuesday and Thursday, September 1 and 3, 2009.

Our quizzes thus far have all been great and most  students have earned extra points by knowing extra information and doing extre work.

Students can earn extra points by bringing a geography question to class that I cannot answer.  If I can answer it they receive no extra points.  If I cannot answer it  and the student can prove that he has the correct answer the student will earn 5 extra points.  Only one question can be asked on any class day.

I will be back in touch when we have completed the homework next week and the quizzes next week.

WARNING!!!  Homework is important to me.  It is the way the students get to know the text book and prepare for tests and quizzes.  The first big homework was due on Monday, August 31st.  There were three students who should have submitted homework who did not do so.  One time is not bad, but if this becomes a habit it can adversely afffect the student's grade.

We have homework due on Wednesday, September 2 and Friday, September 4.  PARENTS, be sure your young person complete his/her homework and remembers to bring it to school on the day it is due.  I do give minimal points for homework.  I do not let students make up homework that is not turned in.  My grading system for homework does not punish the student who misses a time or two because we all forget and make mistakes randomly, but if it is a habit then it can hurt the student's grade.

 PLEASE  HELP ME!!!

September 14, 2009

World Regional Geography has home work due today, September 14, 2009.  It is very long, but it is a great study guide and preparation for the test on Chapter 2 of the text which is scheduled for this Friday, September 18.  Also, a Study Guide will be distributed to the students on Tuesday, September 15th.  This is a rough draft of what the test will look like.  The test will use maps on which the students will be asked to identify and mark specific locations.  The maps are not in the study guude, but the qauestions associated with the maps are in the study guide.  If the student completes the home work and studies the study guide and studies the guide along with a map of the world, the student will do well on the test.  This is good preparation for the students to make good grades on the test, but the amount of material in chapter 2 will require diligent study even with all the home work and study guide helps.

We are doing great in Geography so far.  The students have be very cooperative and studied for the most part.  I am satisfied, that it is good, but it can be better.  Each student can apply himself or herself to make grades better than they are making.  I can teach and relate better also, and I promise to work at my part of the job very diligently.

ALEET!!!!                             ALERT!!!!!                                ALERT!!!!!                                      ALERT!!!!!

Pictures will be made on Thursday, September 17th.  The 9th and 10th grade are to have their pictures made during 4th period.  This is a short period and it is the day before our exam on Chapter 2.  This means we will not have much time to get ready for the test by the review scheduled for that day.  We muct get all of our review work done on Tuesday and Wednesday and the studnts will need to study hard Thursday for the test on Friday.  HELP ME PARENTS BE SEEING THAT YOUR YOUNG PERSON PREPARES FOR THE TEST ON FRIDAY BY STUDYING HARD ON THURSDAY AFTER SCHOOL
